Canine Heartworm disease and Tick disease is on the rise in our area. Prevention is essential for these often fatal diseases.
Here are some facts.
- Heartworm disease left untreated is fatal.
- Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitos which can be problematic year-round in our area.
- Lyme disease can be fatal.
- Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks. Ticks have been proven to be most active in our area during the winter months!
These facts mean that our dogs need Heartworm and tick prevention year-round. While there are several preventives on the market the scheduling of these products get confusing. At LePar we recommend Simparica Trio starting at 8 weeks of age for our canine patients. This medication provides complete protection for heartworm disease, fleas, ticks, and most intestinal parasites. This is a flavored once a month tablet that will provide complete protection for your canine companion.
Another preventative option we recommend is a combination of ProHeart 12 and Bravecto. ProHeart 12 is a once-yearly injection given by our Veterinary staff. This injection provides complete year-round heartworm protection by using microsphere technology to gradually release monthly amounts of its active ingredient. In addition to ProHeart 12 we recommend the use of Bravecto, an oral preventative given every 12 weeks for the prevention of fleas and ticks.
